Jacques Callot (1592 – 1635) was a French printmaker whose subjects ranged from the frivolous festivals of princes to the grim consequences of war. His prints inspired artists from Rembrandt to Goya.
Laurens J. Bol in his book on Adriaen Pietersz. Van de Venne discusses 7 drawings in the Rijksmuseum Kröller – Müller, Otterlo copied from a series of etchings of beggars by Jacques Callot. Six of these drawings bear the signature of Adriaen Pietersz. Van de Venne and dates of 1622, 1623 and 1624. Our drawing by a yet to be identified hand obviously stems from the same group.
